The Woman and the Glacier: Audrius Stonys and the art of Baltic documentary film
At a research outpost high up in the mountains of Kazakhstan, a Lithuanian glaciologist has lived for more than 30 years, measuring shifts in the frozen landscape around her and sending her findings back to a control station in Almaty.
It is a fata morgana. I saw that she was very strong and the mountains are a very fragile system. It hints at an older, more primal sense of belonging, the cyclical continuity of which is reinforced in the film by Soviet-era archival footage of those who came to the mountain to do the same task before her.
From rock slips to melting ice, the changes Stonys captures in the natural environment insist that nothing lasts forever; a state of transience which we know climate change and aggressive tourism that vows to leave no stone untouched will only exacerbate.
A cave of shimmering ice formations, for instance, is akin to science fiction in its breathtaking strangeness. For him, cinema is a medium not to entertain or inform but to reveal wonder.
Words are for journalism, for literature. Cinema can survive without them. Aptly named Antigravitation , his stunning short shows an old woman who climbs a vertiginously steep ladder onto the church roof in a village in the snow-coated countryside. Documentary is now focused on current events, politics and why this or that happened. The Gospel According to Liftman Albertus wryly depicts the routine of an elevator attendant, and whose Before Flying Back to the Earth observes children with leukaemia in Vilnius Paediatric Hospital as if they were at a cosmic station along some spiritual migration.
We see fewer films that try to speak about the soul and raise important questions about death, life and consciousness. I was interested in whether you can see any trace in the new generation, and what we will miss when we lose these directors.

This uncommon documentary portrait take us to the Kazakh part of the Tian Shan mountains where a small glaciological station stands at the base of the Tuiuksu glacier, at an altitude 3, meters. Here, cut off from civilisation, we meet a woman who has voluntarily cast herself into isolation for 30 long years in order to dedicate her life to monitoring the climatic pulse of the planet. Indeed, the images put before us have the magical power of being imbued with everything that the loner scientist has lived through in a land of silence untouched by the noise of historical events. Several scenic viewpoints and pullouts along the way provide motorists with ample opportunities to stop for extended views and photographs. Some drivers and passengers might be a little intimidated by the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Portions of the route hug the mountainside as it traverses over steep drop-offs and steers through tight curves. Due to very little clearance with oncoming traffic, vehicles and vehicles in combination with trailers longer than 21 feet including bumpers or wider than 8 feet including mirrors , are prohibited between Avalanche Campground and the Sun Point parking area.SEE VIDEO BY TOPIC: IDFA 2016 - Trailer - Woman and the Glacier
Some 3, meters above sea level with only her faithful dog and gray cat for company, she studies climate change on the Tuyuksu Glacier at an old Soviet-era research station. She loves the solitude and silence that her painstaking work brings her. Magnificent shots of her surroundings and everyday work are interspersed with archive footage of the people who preceded her by a century. Not much seems to have changed. Living with Revutaite in the solitude she has chosen for herself, the two animals only have each other. The solemn silence of the mountains is punctuated sparingly by the music of a man far, far below, playing a traditional instrument.
